I’m currently working on a new novel…rather excited about it actually – I promise I’m going to come through with this one (motivation through “wooooo, you can do it!” calls would be greatly appreciated!) so it is rather bizarre that I got a wee video request asking for tips on planning out novels…
If you have any advice for myself or other writers then remember – sharing is caring! Would love to hear what has worked, and what hasn’t worked for you!
Oh, and if you have a video request you can leave a comment, or send me an email – if it’s a cool/interesting idea then I will get to it as soon as I can!

You kind of touched on it in the video, but you really need to know your characters like the back of your hand. I have found that the best way to do this is some kind of character interview way you learn all about their past, training, scars et cetera… It is not all relevant for your story, but it does give you all of the points that let you know how they are going to react to any scenario. That is the thing that works for me, but you may have your own ideas about that.
As for planning, yes, the thirty step idea is a really good one. I use a program called Scrivener, which has a really good corkboard setting way you can see your ideas starting to grow into a novel.

How you could have possibly read my mind to know that this is all I’ve ever wanted … all I’ve ever needed, ye-ah. I’m trying – and by trying I mean I’m just procrastinating – to write a novel right now! So please make more as you discover new tips and tricks! =O

There is this author I met through the Amsterdam Writers Guild. David Chislett is his name and he has his own website. He gave a very good workshop about the narrative. The narrative consists of the plot and the story.
He had some very practical and simple tips like writing the ending first. Also good dialogue matters to connect characters to the plot and keep the story going. Look him up I would say.
